<p>How would you respond to a question like this?</p>
<p>I was so excited about <a title="Shaq following me on Twitter" href="http://mollermarketing.com/2008/11/25/how-i-got-the_real_shaq-to-follow-me-on-twitter/" target="_blank">getting @THE_REAL_SHAQ (Shaquille O&#8217;Neal) to follow me on Twitter</a> but as my wife recently asked, SO WHAT?</p>
<p>What about this series of questions, which I&#8217;ve also heard: &#8220;Who cares if you have <strong><a title="mollermarketing on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/mollermarketing" target="_blank">670+ followers on Twitter</a></strong> and are <strong><a title="utah twitter elite" href="http://twitter.grader.com/index.php?Action=TwitterUsersByLocation&amp;Location=Utah" target="_blank">number 10 in the Utah Twitter Elite</a></strong>?&#8221;</p>
<p>As you may have noticed, especially since Blog World Expo, I&#8217;ve <a title="addicted to twitter" href="http://mollermarketing.com/2008/12/02/5-steps-to-avoid-twitter-intoxication/" target="_blank">caught the Twitter Bug</a> and have been using it a lot more lately.  I know my wife has noticed some: I talk often about the connections I&#8217;m making and she see&#8217;s the time I&#8217;m investing in it.</p>
<p>So, what is the answer?  <strong></strong></p>
<h2><strong>Is Twitter Really Worth the Time?</strong> <strong></strong></h2>
<h2><strong>How do I benefit from Twitter, or do I?</strong></h2>
<p>Does a Follow from @THE_REAL_SHAQ, @garyvee (Gary Vaynerchuk), or @MCHammer really matter at all?</p>
<p><strong>Here are 5 Reasons Why I Feel Twitter is Worth the Time</strong></p>
<h2><strong>1. </strong><strong>Connections with Big Names in my Industry</strong></h2>
<ul>
<li><strong><a title="problogger on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/problogger" target="_blank">@problogger</a> (Darren Rowse)</strong></li>
<li><strong><a title="guy kawasaki on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/guykawasaki" target="_blank">@guykawasaki</a> (Guy Kawasaki)</strong></li>
<li><strong><a title="gary vaynerchuk on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/garyvee" target="_blank">@garyvee</a> (Gary Vaynerchuk)</strong></li>
<li><strong><a title="muhammad saleem on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/msaleem" target="_blank">@msaleem</a></strong> (<strong>Muhammad Saleem</strong>)</li>
</ul>
<p>Need I say more?  If these marketing master-minds are investing their time on Twitter, why shouldn&#8217;t you and me?  I realize that each of these industry experts has their own unique Twitter strategy but all of them use Twitter as a source for networking and communication.</p>
<h2><strong>2. Potential New Business</strong></h2>
<p><strong>Five Telephone Contacts Via Twitter in the Last Week</strong>: Five new relevant contacts in my industries within the last 7 days may not be much to you, but if even ONE of those contacts turns in to something of value, I&#8217;ll continue to bless Twitter&#8217;s name!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m preparing a Tuesday Tutorial on How to Connect with the Right People on Twitter &#8211; Stay tune.  One of the things I&#8217;ve liked most about TweetDeck, a Twitter Client you should check out, is that you can group people you follow.  For example, say I&#8217;m looking for Twitter people that are cloggers &#8211; there may not be too many but go with me&#8230;Once I find them, I can add them all in to a group that I watch and stay up to date with.  One of these people may propose the question, &#8220;Does anyone know where I can find <a title="used clogging shoes" href="http://www.clogon.com/used-clogging-shoes.html" target="_blank">used clogging shoes</a>?&#8221;  Pick me, Pick Me!  I would immediately message them to check out <a title="www.ClogOn.com" href="http://www.ClogOn.com" target="_blank">www.ClogOn.com</a> for a wide variety of new and used clogging shoes.  Make sense?  Good!</p>
<h2><strong>3. Brand Recognition and Placement</strong></h2>
<p>Twitter is helping me building my brand to thousands (if not millions) of people. Here are my current Twitter numbers:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-747" title="mollermarketing on twitter" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/picture-23.png" alt="" width="197" height="101" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">These are mediocre numbers to some, but they continue to grow, even as I type this content.  More importantly, here are some of the numbers of &#8220;big Tweeple&#8221; (Twitter People) that are following me:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-748 aligncenter" title="mchammer on twitter" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/picture-24.png" alt="" width="196" height="131" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://twitter.com/mchammer" target="_blank">@MCHammer</a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-750" title="garyvee-on-twitter1" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/garyvee-on-twitter1.png" alt="" width="195" height="188" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://twitter.com/garyvee" target="_blank">@garyvee</a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-751" title="guy-kawasaki-on-twitter" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/guy-kawasaki-on-twitter.png" alt="" width="205" height="116" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://twitter.com/guykawasaki" target="_blank">@guykawasaki</a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-752" title="the_real_shaq-on-twitter" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/the_real_shaq-on-twitter.png" alt="" width="197" height="129" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@THE_REAL_SHAQ</a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">That&#8217;s a total of <strong>89,208 followers</strong>.  The one thing I have to be aware of is that not all of those followers are interested in what I&#8217;m doing nor will they all follow me; however, after getting Shaq to follow me, I received over 100 new followers in 24 hours without adding a single to person to my list.  Not bad for a days work (and a few of them have Direct Messaged me for more information on what I do).</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong>4. </strong><strong>Increased Direct Traffic</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;">Currently over 7% of my direct traffic at MollerMarketing.com is coming from Twitter.  This is probably actually a low number because some of the visitors may be using a Twitter client that won&#8217;t track where visitors are coming from.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Please keep in mind that traffic, in and of itself, is only as good as what you do with it, but &#8220;something is better than nothing&#8221;, right?</p>
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong>5. Ask a Question, Get a Response<br />
</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;">More and more, when I have a technical question, want feedback on something, or whatever, my first impulse will be to go to Twitter for the answer.  As I read other twitter posts and follow specific blogs about Twitter strategy, I&#8217;ve seen some of the big names use Twitter in this way too; here&#8217;s <a title="benefits of twitter" href="http://www.twitip.com/benefits-twitter/" target="_blank">what Darren Rowse says about Twitter for research</a>:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><img class="alignnone" title="benefits of twitter" src="http://www.twitip.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/personal-search-engline.png" alt="" width="535" height="206" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So, there you have it &#8211; my comeback to the wife&#8217;s question about -</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Why Having People Like Shaq Follow You on Twitter is So Awesome! </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Let us know who&#8217;s following you on Twitter and why it&#8217;s been so beneficial to you.</p>

<h4>What is FEAR?</h4>
<p>(pardon the picture, I couldn&#8217;t resist <img src='http://mollermarketing.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  )</p>
<h4>Why do you have FEAR of Success (or is that even possible)?</h4>
<p>One of my favorite quotes was from a client I work with. He said the following:</p>
<blockquote><p>NO is the first two letters of &#8216;Not Yet!&#8217;</p></blockquote>
<p>Now how does this apply to <strong>making money on the internet</strong>?</p>
<p>If you always let fear hold you back from making important contacts, talking to suppliers, interviewing the big names in your industry, etc. you&#8217;ll never see the results you are hoping for &#8211; GUARANTEED!</p>
<p>Do I need to state that again for clarification?  If you don&#8217;t <a title="stepping out of your comfort zone" href="http://mollermarketing.com/2008/05/01/stepping-out-of-your-comfort-zone/">Step Out of Your Comfort Zone</a> and ask for success, it won&#8217;t come!</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an excerpt from a client who has stepped out of her comfort zone again and again:</p>
<blockquote><p>Nate,<br />
I just went out and got 6 local businesses to let me look at their websites and make recommendations, in return they will give me ringing endorsements and testimonials so I can [get] started… I also posted on craigslist, I also applied for my local Rotary…Nate <strong>when I started I was shaking in my shoes!</strong> <strong>By the end of my trip</strong> down main street with my 6 yes and 2 no’s, <strong>I was singing!!</strong> I gave out my business cards to everyone and <strong>I now remember how good all this feels</strong>!! (bold added for emphasis)</p></blockquote>
<p>Fear is defined by Wikipedia as:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;an emotional response to threats and danger. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of pain&#8230;</p>
<p>Fear should be distinguished from the related emotional state of anxiety, which typically occurs without any external threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of <strong>threats which are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable</strong>. (bold added for emphasis)</p></blockquote>
<p>Recently I was given the opportunity to Guest Post for Darren Rowse, the famous blogger at ProBlogger.net and the new TwiTip.com.  I guest posted on <strong><a title="how to set up a twitter account" href="http://www.twitip.com/how-to-set-up-a-twitter-account/" target="_blank">How to Set Up a Twitter Account</a></strong>.  Here&#8217;s a portion of that post:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Step 1</strong>: Go to Twitter.com &#8211; You&#8217;ll see this page</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="alignnone" title="how to set up a twitter account" src="http://www.twitip.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/setup-twitter-1.png" alt="" width="462" height="332" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="twitter tips" href="http://www.twitip.com/how-to-set-up-a-twitter-account/" target="_blank">Read the rest of the article and please comment!</a></p>
<p>I truly feel this is one of those &#8220;<strong>Small Successes</strong>&#8221; that is leading to &#8220;<strong>Big Success</strong>!&#8221;</p>
<ul>
<li>Was I a bit reluctant to ask about the opportunity, absolutely &#8211; What if he says NO?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Was I afraid my content wouldn&#8217;t be good enough? For sure&#8230;</li>
</ul>
<p>But the bottom line is, I asked, and it worked!  If you never ask for what you want, you&#8217;ll never get it!</p>
<p><strong>What experiences have YOU had where you stepped out of your comfort zone and saw direct results from overcoming your fear?</strong></p>

<h2 style="text-align: left;">Step 2: <strong>Peer Pressure Leads Down the <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Right</span> Wrong Path: </strong></h2>
<p>(aka going to Blog World Expo 2008 and hearing a lot about how effective Twitter is for online marketing).  Look at what Blogging Peer Pressure has done to me recently:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-703 aligncenter" title="tweet-stats-2" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/tweet-stats-2.png" alt="" width="500" height="288" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<h3></h3>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Step 3: <strong>Recognize the Worst Day &amp; Strive to Tweet <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">More</span> Less!</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-704 aligncenter" title="tweet-stats-3" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/tweet-stats-3.png" alt="" width="329" height="238" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">As you can see, mid-week, the &#8220;hump day&#8221;, has been the day of biggest Twitter Intoxication.  Recognizing I have a problem is the first step toward recovery, right? <img src='http://mollermarketing.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<h3></h3>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Step 4: <strong>Who are your friends &amp; Why did they bring you here?</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-705 aligncenter" title="tweet-stats-4" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/tweet-stats-4.png" alt="" width="335" height="228" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Avoid that friendly tweet as much as you can &#8211; or <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">don&#8217;t</span> follow the following people -</p>
<ul>
<li><a title="dan patterson on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/dan_patterson" target="_blank">@dan_patterson </a></li>
<li><a title="russ page on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/russpage" target="_blank">@russpage</a></li>

<li><a title="shoemoney on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/shoemoney" target="_blank">@shoemoney</a></li>
</ul>
<h3></h3>
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Step 5: Where are you Most Vulnerable?</h2>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-706 aligncenter" title="tweet-stats-5" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/tweet-stats-5.png" alt="" width="347" height="224" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Does knowing this really even help? If you&#8217;re like me and live online all day every day doing <strong>search engine optimization</strong> and helping clients <strong>start an online business</strong>, avoiding Twitter followers, DM Tweets, and Twitterfox updates will be impossible!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Here&#8217;s a survey to <strong>See How Twitter Intoxicated you are</strong>:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">[poll id="4"]</p>

<p>Tuesday&#8217;s are usually a Tutorial day but I couldn&#8217;t wait to post this &#8220;moral victory&#8221;!</p>
<h2><img class="size-medium wp-image-681" title="shaq-17" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-17.jpg" alt="" width="110" height="95" align="right" /></h2>
<h2><a title="@the_real_shaq on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@the_real_shaq</a> is Following Me on Twitter!</h2>
<p>I know, many of you are saying &#8211; Who Cares!?  But here&#8217;s the quick version of the story:</p>
<p><span id="more-655"></span></p>
<h3><strong>Step 1</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> My friend @ryansmiller sent me a message saying that <a title="shaq on twitter" href="http://blog.twitter.com/2008/11/his-tweets-are-shaqalicious.html" target="_blank">Shaquille O&#8217;Neal was now using twitter</a>.</p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 2</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> I thanked @ryansmiller for the discovery</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-656" title="shaq-1" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-1.png" alt="" width="471" height="45" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 3</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> I checked out who he was following &#8211; any other basketball icons, famous people, etc. and followed him:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-657" title="shaq-2" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-2.png" alt="" width="474" height="48" /></p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-661" title="shaq-6" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-6.png" alt="" width="492" height="46" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 4</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> After posting on Twitter that I was checking out who <a title="shaq on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@the_real_shaq</a> was following, I get this response from @atraine:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-658" title="shaq-3" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-3.png" alt="" width="500" height="45" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 5</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> I follow this response with a sarcastic come back, hoping that <a title="shaq on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@the_real_shaq</a> would see the reply and follow me (didn&#8217;t happen):</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-659" title="shaq-4" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-4.png" alt="" width="481" height="62" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 6</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> The Shaq Attack Challenge was made by @atraine:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-660" title="shaq-5" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-5.png" alt="" width="457" height="44" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 7</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> I begin &#8220;The Quest&#8221; to get <a title="shaq on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@the_real_shaq</a> to follow me on Twitter:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-662" title="shaq-7" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-7.png" alt="" width="493" height="58" /><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-663" title="shaq-8" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-8.png" alt="" width="492" height="56" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 8</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> Reminding my friend that I haven&#8217;t forgot about the Shaq Attack Challenge:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-664" title="shaq-9" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-9.png" alt="" width="490" height="48" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 9</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> The Quest continues&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-665" title="shaq-10" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-10.png" alt="" width="490" height="57" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 10</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> A bit of &#8220;Relationship Building!&#8221;  Building the &#8220;<strong>Twitter Trust!</strong>&#8221;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-666" title="shaq-11" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-11.png" alt="" width="490" height="55" /><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-667" title="shaq-12" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-12.png" alt="" width="490" height="56" /></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Step 11</strong></h3>
<p><strong></strong> (the most crucial step in Twitter Trust!) Now I go in for the KILL &#8211; I connect with someone that <a title="shaq on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ" target="_blank">@the_real_shaq</a> talks with on Twitter &#8211; @PhoenizSunsGirl!</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-668" title="shaq-13" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-13.png" alt="" width="490" height="59" /></p>
<p>VIOLA! Within a few hours <a title="shaq friends on twitter" href="http://twitter.com/THE_REAL_SHAQ/friends" target="_blank" class="broken_link">Shaq is following me on Twitter</a>!</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-670" title="shaq-15" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-15.png" alt="" width="500" height="187" /><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-671" title="shaq-16" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-16.png" alt="" width="500" height="185" /></p>
<p>Not only do I get a FOLLOW, but I get a reply as well:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-672" title="shaq-17" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-17.png" alt="" width="500" height="145" /></p>
<p>And of course, I have to respond to Superman:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-673" title="shaq-18" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-18.png" alt="" width="500" height="61" /></p>
<p>My thanks go out to the Connection of all Connections <a title="http://twitter.com/phoenixsunsgirl" href="http://twitter.com/phoenixsunsgirl" target="_blank">@phoenixsunsgirl</a> (follow her!):</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-669" title="shaq-14" src="http://mollermarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/shaq-14.png" alt="" width="485" height="147" /></p>
<p>(spelling error &#8220;one&#8221; for special effect <img src='http://mollermarketing.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  )</p>
<p>So, there you have it:</p>
