10 Social Media Marketing Books To Read in 2010

10 Social Media Marketing Books To Read in 2010

Posted on 17. Nov, 2009 by Nate in Setting Goals, Starting an Online Business

I know, 2010 isn’t here yet.

But the Holidays are right around the corner; they’re playing Christmas music on the radio, and snow is on the ground in Utah!

So, I’ve started thinking about what my goals and objectives should be for 2010.

Speedometer - Reaching Your GoalOne of the things I really want to commit to doing more of in 2010 is READING! I’ve been working harder (not tonight – it’s almost 12:30 a.m.) to stick to a schedule. It consists of the following morning activities:

  • waking up at a certain time – TBD :)
  • reading a motivational book for 30 minutes
  • meditating
  • writing down thoughts and goals for the day

In the evening, I’ve set these priorities:

  • finishing “work” by a certain time – TBD too :)
  • planning out the following day with a “To-Do List
  • reading a business book for 30 minutes
  • meditating
  • lights off by ____?

When I follow this “agenda” – my entire day and week seem to go better.

Do you follow a specific agenda?

As you can see, I’ve designated at least 30 minutes per day, 7 days a week, to read a business book.

As I start to think about my goals for 2010, here are a list of marketing books I plan to read:

Top 10 Social Media Marketing Books I Plan to Read!

  1. Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion
  2. Inbound Marketing: Get Found Using Google, Social Media, and Blogs (The New Rules of Social Media)
  3. The New Rules of Marketing and PR
  4. The Social Media Bible: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Business Success
  5. Socialnomics: How social media transforms the way we live and do business
  6. Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day
  7. ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income
  8. Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us
  9. Purple Cow, New Edition: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable
  10. the-tipping-pointThe Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

The Tipping Point is the highest rated book of all of these according to Amazon – it’s number 74!

I’m excited for the upcoming year and look forward to setting and achieving the goals I write down and review frequently.

I’m also excited to hear about your online marketing success and how these books help you become the best social media marketers and online business owners.

    Hi Nate,

Your agenda sounds powerful! I’m glad to see that you too make time for meditation. I have found that it really makes a difference in my productivity when beginning the day with some quiet introspection.

In fact, I’ve written an E-book about my successes over the past couple of years, and meditation plays an important role. The book is tentatively titled, “I Got A Coach and Got a Life” (A story of unemployment to successful self employment during the recession). You and Prosper Learning are prominently featured in the book as well.

I hope to have it released by January and look forward to sending you a copy.

      Hey Cliff!

Great to hear from you! I’m excited to read your ebook. In fact, if you’re interested, I’ll even right up a “forward” or something talking about how great a student you were.

      Keep me posted!

      Nate

Nate, Thank you for the book recommendations. I am definitely adding these to my required reading list. Thanks for the daily agenda. I am in the process or establishing my daily agenda, as well. Also, as an update…working with you last year (Prosper Learning) with my husband Jovan has been so beneficial for both of us. You firmly established a foundation for us that we are still growing from as we continue our current businesses and launch new web based businesses.

    Nate,

Your dedication to your profession is awesome! I need to honestly say that in all the years I’ve been in the business, I’ve never once been able to read through a single industry specific book. I’m too busy life-hacking my way to knowledge.

On the other hand, I subscribe to and avidly read B2B magazine, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, National Geographic Traveler, Readers Digest (yes, really), and Newsweek. I find the combination helps me stay in the mind-set of small and mid-size business owners from their perspective.

Thanks for the comment Alan! I know that reading, whether it be online via blogs, forums, ebooks or actual hard copy stuff, is such a key to the little details that separate the serious from the curious, especially in our industry.

Besides the ones you mentioned, what are your top 5 blogs about SEO and Social Media that you recommend?

Oh great just what I need! More books to read!
I’ve got the Social Media Bible sitting next to me right now. It’s a very good book and well worth the investment.
I’ll add the rest of them to my growing list.
Good luck on your goals and objectives for 2010. I hope you keep us updated. Thanks!

Thanks Stefanie. I’ve read one of the sections of the book – the one Gary gave away as a pre-published sample. I really like how he’s so direct, to the point and REAL about how things really are in the online marketing world.

How are you implementing what you learned in Crush It?

Half way through Crush. It’s really helped to get an overview and inspired me to go deeper and get a better understanding. Great to find you on Nate’s page Stephanie, I have now signed up to your “Social Networker” and loved the Intro to Twitter. Exactly what I was looking for a couple of months ago. Nate tell all your newbies about this, please. Thanks guys

Nice list. I’m looking forward to reading some of these myself. Another one you should check out once you get through those is Trust Agents by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith.

      Adam,

Thanks for the recommendation. I do like reading Chris Brogan’s blog and will check that book out. If all goes as planned, I’ll have at least 2 months left in 2010 to ready a couple more books.

      Wish me luck!

Nate – great plan and list of books. Also, look into Robin Sharma’s “The Greatness Guide” – has good insights on achieving your personal best. Also, I got a lot out of Ken Robinson’s, “The Element – How finding your passion changes everything.” Terrific book from an expert on creativity and innovation. Cheers!

Greg – thanks for the additional recommendation. I’ll need a book like “The Greatness Guide” to motivate me to hold to this list of goals and objectives.

Even though I haven’t read Ken Robinson’s book either, just the title about passion is intriguing. As I work with clients who are building online businesses, this is probably the most important concept I teach – you have to DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE or it’s just another J.O.B.

Thanks again for the comment and recommendations.

Thanks, Nate. Great list. A few of these are on my nightstand…and have been for a while. By the time I’m done tweeting and posting for the day, I’m too tired to read. Altho a new edition of Purple Cow can’t be too long!

The only one I haven’t read is Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day. Nevertheless, you’re dead on with this list. They are all “Must Reads”.

Another one that I’d suggest is Get Content, Get Customers. Very insightful and well written.

Good, more books! But only an hour a day?

Do agree reading is reading and good magazines, blogs, etc. count. I’d also like to see a list from Alan of edifying stuff.

Cliff — is there somewhere where one could sign up for announcement of when your writing is ready? I’ve just been through my longest stretch of unemployment ever, and made daydreams and steps towards unemployment…
and just got the complication of an encore performance at my favorite temp job of the century. So adjusting to more money and a tenth the discretionary time.

    Thanks for various good reads.

Hi Nate, been doing this, too , for a while now, that’s how I keep sane. It’s great to have some books on SMM to explore as I am still trying to get my brain round this… Have signed up to Facebook and Wordpress and doing a bit a day on these in the Kaizen way (One Smal Step Can Change Your Life – the Kaizen Way by Robert Maurer) and beginning to gradually piece the social media thing together But am still trying to figure out Twitter ! Any instant quick reads on this one ?
Thanks, for what you do to keep us on track !
