Tuesday Tutorial: 5 Steps to Avoid Twitter Intoxication
Posted on 02. Dec, 2008 by Nate Moller in Twitter
Warning, by reading this, you may be the next victim of Twitter Intoxication – proceed with caution…
Are you staying up late tweeting? Does everything you do become your “next best tweet”? Do you get really excited when someone like Shaquille O’Neal is following you on Twitter?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, welcome to the Twitter Intoxication Recovery Post!
Step 1: Be aware of what your getting in to before you start:
Tweetstats.com is a step in the right direction. Maybe, as you get started with twitter, you can put some limits on your Twitter Frenzy.

Step 2: Peer Pressure Leads Down the Right Wrong Path:
(aka going to Blog World Expo 2008 and hearing a lot about how effective Twitter is for online marketing). Look at what Blogging Peer Pressure has done to me recently:

Step 3: Recognize the Worst Day & Strive to Tweet More Less!

As you can see, mid-week, the “hump day”, has been the day of biggest Twitter Intoxication. Recognizing I have a problem is the first step toward recovery, right?
Step 4: Who are your friends & Why did they bring you here?

Avoid that friendly tweet as much as you can – or don’t follow the following people -
- @dan_patterson
- @russpage
- @Matt_Siltala
- @NewspaperGrl
- @ryansmiller
- @andybeal
- @vinceblackham
- @burntflame
- @shoemoney
Step 5: Where are you Most Vulnerable?

Does knowing this really even help? If you’re like me and live online all day every day doing search engine optimization and helping clients start an online business, avoiding Twitter followers, DM Tweets, and Twitterfox updates will be impossible!
Here’s a survey to See How Twitter Intoxicated you are:

My number of tweets actually went way down in November because I found that I was spending too much time on Twitter and not getting other things done. Twitter is fun and can be a good tool, but you have to not get sucked in to using it like a silly chat room!

Saw you back on twitter today for a short time. Your were my number one friend as of last month.
It’s all about Twitter Strategy and Twitter Objectives. If you know where you want to go with it, Twitter can be a great source for growth in business.
Unfortunately, I haven’t COMPLETELY discovered what my strategy and objectives are – hence the Twitter Intoxication!

The Break Up was inevitable – look what you’ve gotten me in to – I stay up til the wee hours of the morning working on blog posts, doing SEO stuff, and Tweeting with potential clients – all for the love of the game!
But I’ll still follow you on Twitter!

Ok, here’s the deal. I have been a member with twitter for … a while. I don’t even know when I signed up – but I know I didn’t use it and I didn’t get it. However, for the last week or so I’ve really gotten into it.
) So my breakdown? 2 tweets in Oct… 65 in Nov… and *ahem* 129 for December. (Isn’t today 12/2???) Yep, I better nip this in the bud before I need tweetment too!

Who caused you to join Twitter? Who’s fault was it? Those terrible people that got you in to this Twitter Mess
Tweetment is in effect. If you have any ideas for “Tweetment” – definitely share for all of us Twitter Addicts!

I noticed something changing recently when I started linking my Twitter account to my comment name instead of my blog. And, now, I can’t seem to sign off on a comment without putting the @ symbol in front of my screen name.
If I didn’t feel like there was some sort of race or something going on to build the largest Twitter follower base, I think I could stay away a lot easier. However, you can’t build a large “network of associates” as @JimConnolly calls it, unless you really connect with people in a meaningful way so that they will promote you to their friends. Case in point… I’m not on your list, UP THERE, yet! LOL
So, this tells me we haven’t connected deeply enough for you to feel compelled to share with the world, how incredible your new Twitter friend is, and how great it would be for everyone to follow him! Hmm…. what will it take! I could tell you that @RichardBranson was following me, but, well, he’s being smart and following everyone, so that won’t really impress you. Well, we’ll just have to continue along this road parting Twisdom to each other in hopes that we make a big enough impact on each other that we just can’t resist letting everyone know about each other. Sounds good to me!
Have an amazingly outstanding day!

We’ll definitely talk about this more. Twitter can be “intoxicating” and a big waste of time. However, I’ve connected with some pretty big names and look forward to writing a post soon on how I’ve “monetized my twitter experience”!
Talk to you soon! Thanks for the comments!

I am a twitter newbie and appreciate the information. I am trying to discern the best use of twitter for me and how I can balance twitter with my day job, my ecommerce site (www.goodfibers.com) and my family. There are lots of tools out there to use with Twitter, but starting out it is all overload. What would your recommendations be for a newbie like me? Thanks!
