Tuesday Tutorial: How I Got Shaq to Follow Me on Twitter

Posted on 25. Nov, 2008 by Nate Moller in Twitter

Tuesday’s are usually a Tutorial day but I couldn’t wait to post this “moral victory”!

@the_real_shaq is Following Me on Twitter!

I know, many of you are saying – Who Cares!?  But here’s the quick version of the story:

Step 1

My friend @ryansmiller sent me a message saying that Shaquille O’Neal was now using twitter.

Step 2

I thanked @ryansmiller for the discovery

Step 3

I checked out who he was following – any other basketball icons, famous people, etc. and followed him:

Step 4

After posting on Twitter that I was checking out who @the_real_shaq was following, I get this response from @atraine:

Step 5

I follow this response with a sarcastic come back, hoping that @the_real_shaq would see the reply and follow me (didn’t happen):

Step 6

The Shaq Attack Challenge was made by @atraine:

Step 7

I begin “The Quest” to get @the_real_shaq to follow me on Twitter:

Step 8

Reminding my friend that I haven’t forgot about the Shaq Attack Challenge:

Step 9

The Quest continues…

Step 10

A bit of “Relationship Building!”  Building the “Twitter Trust!

Step 11

(the most crucial step in Twitter Trust!) Now I go in for the KILL – I connect with someone that @the_real_shaq talks with on Twitter – @PhoenizSunsGirl!

VIOLA! Within a few hours Shaq is following me on Twitter!

Not only do I get a FOLLOW, but I get a reply as well:

And of course, I have to respond to Superman:

My thanks go out to the Connection of all Connections @phoenixsunsgirl (follow her!):

(spelling error “one” for special effect :) )

So, there you have it:

Reconversion is a great step in the Twitter direction! I’ve not only seen my number of followers go in 30 people in 24 hours (not sure that’s really good or not) but I’ve also seen an influx of traffic to this site.

It’s all about connections and Twitter is a great tool to connect!

      Happy Tweeting!

Oh how it burns! You are one of the now almost 12,000 people trying desperately to get Shaq to follow you! Luuuuuckeeeee!

It’s been fun to see what he talks about. It was crazy when he had one of his skeptical followers CALL HIM and then invite him to a game http://mashable.com/2008/11/21/shaq-twitter/

He’s picked up on the Twitter usage and MAN that guy doesn’t sleep! My wife really wants him to get Steve Nash onto Twitter, she’s got some crazy crush on him!?!? I know @PhoenixSunsGirl has been pushing for that too.

Congrats on getting the Big Aristotle to follow you! Hey Shaq, if you read this show a Laker fan some love! Miss you in LA!

      11,859

      Those are pretty good numbers!

It’s fun how these “Small Success[es] lead to Big Success[es]” – it would be awesome if I could get him to comment on this post! Stay tune :) (I’m getting a bit too cocky for my own good probably!)

Seriously, though, how do you know that’s the “real” Shaq?

It does seem like he doesn’t follow just anyone, which is cool, so cool you got him to follow you.

      Hey Paddy,

I challenge you to get @garyvee to follow you on Twitter. This guy is AWESOME but has so many followers that he only follows people from time to time. I recently got him to follow me too but haven’t seen the direct effects like I did with the Shaq follow.

Let me know how it goes!

        Ok, You’re on.

Yeah @garyvee rocks! His talks and videos are always so inspirational. OK, I’m on a mission now, will keep in touch…

You gonna buy me a pint if I get him?

Document the process you take and we’ll feature on MollerMarketing.com!

Not even sure what a “pint” is – I’m from Utah where that’s all illegal :)

          Thanks for the comments!

    Will do!

I’m from Ireland, where I think its illegal to not have a pint a day :) http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/9/91/GuinnessPint.JPG

So the bet is on then? If i’m to follow your guidelines then I need a challenger :)

    Job done!

Gary just started following me! And even sent me a DM!

    Check it out: http://iampaddy.com/garyvee_follow.png

    And his DM: http://iampaddy.com/garyvee_dm.png

Not sure if there is much to document because @garyvee is such a legend!?

Can you mail a pint these days? ;)

Is it possible to “email you” a “pint”! Great work – that was quick. What was your strategy – how’d you do it? Have you seen increased followers since?

I think the toughest followers are the ones who have TONS of followers but have only followed a select few…

      Your thoughts?

        Dunno, Fedex maybe? :D

Eh, not much of a strategy really.

I just tweeted: ‘@garyvee , @mollermarketing has bet me a pint that I cant get you to follow me. Please get me a pint Gary you legend!’

And wihtin minutes he followes me and sent me a DM ‘Enjoy the PINT MY MAN :) make it something good not some trash ;)

Haven’t seen much of a rise in followers, suppose he would need to tweet publicly mentioning @paddydonnelly and then it would entice people. But yeah I agree, I try to limit the amount of people I follow as you can’t keep up with the relevant content over the ‘noise’.

Great stuff! @garyvee, although a bit high energy or “down right annoying” (as one client told me after watching a v-log of Gary), is one amazing dude!

I’m going to do a post about Who’s the Best Twitter Person to Follow (and be followed by) and Why?

What do you think? For me so far it’s definitely been @THE_REAL_SHAQ! (and you of course – my Pint Man Friend!)

          Thanks for the comments!
