4 Reasons Why I Love Twitter

Posted on 21. Nov, 2008 by Nate in Twitter

twitter tips for beginnersI had a friend recently ask me this question, “Give me some reasons you love twitter?”

I’ve been using Twitter since April of 2007. (My first Twitter post was right after the Viginia Tech massascre.)  Although I didn’t go crazy with Twitter initially and have really been on and off even now, the more I use it and interact, the more I’m realizing how effective it can be in many ways.

So, when I was posed the question, It didn’t take me long to respond.

Here are 4 Reasons I Love Twitter:

  1. Connection to the big names in the online industry.  Not only can I chat with them in “real time”, but I can follow what they are doing, read articles they share, and get to “know” them in a Twitter way.
  2. Ability to ask questions and get response: I’ve been doing this a lot lately.  Instead of going to Google, I go to Twitter and post a question.  9 times out of 10 I get a response, either in a reply message or a direct message.  Received a few recenlty from @problogger and @msaleem – two of my favorite “tweeples”.
  3. Twitterfeed: I really love this program.  It allows you to publish blog feeds automatically from different blogs.  What this means is, when I published the post about How to Make a Blog Post in Wordpress, within an hour or so my Twitter page said this:

New @MollerMarketing Tuesday Tutorial: Making a Blog Post in Wordpress http://tinyurl.com/5hxd62

Not only does that build a link for me, but my “followers” will see the post, come to the blog if they like the title, and even make a comment.

  4. Reputation Managment: Twitter is yet another way to protect your name and reputation while at the same time networking with whoever you want.  One of the best ways to do this is create multiple twitter accounts.  If you’re using Twitter for business brand management, use your domain name minus the .com, .net, etc.  For example,  I recently set up a new @clogon twitter account, even though I haven’t done anything with it.  I also have a @utahcounty account and @mollermarketing (which is the one I use the most.)

So, there’s a few tips on Twitter.  One of the sites I have really enjoyed reading and that I recommend if you’re getting in to Twitter is TwiTip.com.  A good article to read if you’re just getting started is 10 Easy Steps for Twitter Beginners.

    I’ve been slow to adopt twitter…and mixx…

No reason why – I guess I just feel like I already have 5 or 6 social or personal media accounts and I just don’t have time for other interactive or personal media outlets. lol

Which 5 or 6 other accounts do you find beneficial and why?

What I’ve been trying to do is watch the time I’m on twitter and keep it to a reasonable amount – otherwise, it can be a major problem

      Thanks for the comment!

Twitter is a pretty cool tool. I’ve seriously cut back on my use of it though because I found it can be a huge time suck if you let it. But I agree that it is great for networking and sending stuff out.

If I were just starting to use twitter, I’d write down the five main reasons I plan to use it and then schedule a certain time every day or every other day to use it. Just jumping in without any tentative plan can be a potential waste of time (like other comments have mentioned).

      Happy Tweeting! Ha!

Social media like Twitter are making newspapers and magazines slowly irrelevant. When the roots bus flipped over, I heard about it on Twitter, for Q-Tip in an ambulance. The news didn’t break that story until the following night.

If used correctly, this is an exceptional tool.

Agreed! Talk about “Real Time Media!” If you’re wise in your “following strategy” you can even find out what @the_real_shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) is doing via Twitter. My goal is to get Shaq to follow me on Twitter just to say “we’re twitter friends!” (if you follow him, please let him know @mollermarketing recommended it :) )

    Nate:

Thanks for this post on Twitter, I just started using it and I was looking for a application just like TwitterFeed so I just added it. It’s taken me awhile to really understand the power of Social Networking but I think I am finally beginning to get it.

I find Twitter to be an odd site but it connects people. Having just launched a social network myself I look forwrad to promoting it on twitter. I guaranttee some exciting things will happen. One thing I have learned from the book I wrote is that evn though Twitter can be a great asset, you need a Twitter Plan. Not that big of a deal but let’s say 15 minutes per day devoted to Twitter. If you stick with it consistantly you will meet people that you can do business with. But if you don’t stick wth it everyday then don’t bother, spend your time elsewhere.
