Tuesday Tutorial: Making a Blog Post in Wordpress

Consistent blogging is an important part of effectively using your website to get quality traffic and good search engine placement. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to make a blog post:

Step 1:

Login to your website by typing http://yourdomainname.com/wp-admin

The page will look like this:

Step 2:

After logging in, Click the “Write a New Post” tab.

Step 3:

The page will now look like this:

Start Blogging!

The best news is, when you get to this point, it’s very similar to typing a document in Word.

Important things to be aware of:

  • The Title of the Blog Post will also be the URL of the post (ie. if the title is How to Make a Blog Post, the URL will be http://www.yourdomainname.com/how-to-make-a-blog-post.html) If you want your blog posts to be recognized by search engines and catch the attention of new visitors, use good keywords in the title of your blog post.

Recently bloggers tend to shorten their URLs inasmuch as their posting become totally boring. I won’t click /2008/06/27/google if I see only the URLs (like, say, in an email) but I will click google-files-for-bankruptcy…

  • If you write quite a bit of content but aren’t ready to have it seen by others, click Save on the right of the screen. This will keep the blog post a draft; you can come back, make adjustments, and when you’re ready, “Publish” the blog post so other readers can see the post and make comments.

    Good information, but when you write a blog and publish it does it go to our website or does it go to other blog publishers or how does it get published on other blog sites. If it is only published on our website, how do search engines locate it so people can see it?

      Great question Jesse. When you write a blog post, it is then published to YOUR website/blog for search engines and readers to see. The best news is that you have complete control of what is published so you can create links within the content, edit at any time and make it more readable to your visitors and to search engines (all things we can discuss).

      After you get a feel for making your own blog posts, you can then start going out to other bloggers in your industry and make comments, guest post on popular blogs, etc.
