Starting an Online Business: Why is Passion Key?
Posted on 25. Sep, 2008 by Nate in Starting an Online Business
I had a great opportunity last weekend at Blog World Expo 2008 in Las Vegas, NV: I got to interview some of my favorite bloggers and online marketers. Stay tuned on the Moller Marketing Podcast…
One of the main questions I asked all of them was this:
Why is PASSION such a key part of starting an online business?
The answers of the people I interviewed had similar elements, but before I reveal them, what do you, the MollerMarketing.com readers, think about this question?
What would you do for a living if money were not an issue? Would you ski all day? Be a fashion designer? Open a coffee shop? Travel the world? Write screenplays? Paint? Invent toys? Read? (Sphere Magazine)

Passion is what it’s all about, especially for a first-time business owner. Owning a business is hard and takes commitment and work during the down times when cash flow is low. Your own interest or passion in the subject can carry you.

I have written about this on my own sites and ghost written about this for some other big SEO blogs. Passion is key. Do what you love and the money will follow.

For sure – this is how ShoeMoney has done so well, it’s how Darren Rowse has become who he is, and the list goes on and on.

@Andrew – I agree about the first time business owner. I’m doing sites now that aren’t as much about the passion, but that, because of experience, I know what to expect going in to a new venture. Even if the passion isn’t there as much for the new idea, I can CREATE the PASSION because I don’t have unrealistic expectations.
@Wingnut – wanna guest post here about the subject? I feel this is one of the key points to starting an online business, or any business for that matter. If a client is SO FOCUSED on JUST THE MONEY, they’re going to chase every “get rich quick” scheme that flies by and never succeed at any of them.
Thanks for the comments! Keep them coming!

Passion is fuel for the fire. It’s what can keep you and your business going. There are times where you can be TOO passionate and take things [too far] – not know when to quit because your emotions are too vested in your creations. You just need to be wise in your decisions.

I totally agree with that too – if you’re “passionate” about something that’s just flat out STUPID, it could get you in trouble! So I guess the question is, where is the fine line between being passionate about something and chasing an unrealistic dream…
